Our Pets

Our house is like a zoo, we have so many animals here.  But not like dogs or cats or any ordinary animals, because those would eat our out-of-the-ordinary ones.  So without further ado, the pets of the Nelson home!

1. First up is the oldest one of them all, Frodo the chinchilla!
Chinchillas are squirrel-like creatures from the Andes mountains, their fur is so soft it makes fluffy clouds weep tears of jealousy.  They also have cool snake-like eyes.  Chinchillas cost around $150.00 in pet stores, but Frodo was given to me as a gift when he was five years old by my dad's assistant at work.  He is called Frodo because A) he has furry feet and B) he has a tendency to disappear out of thin air.  He has blessed this home with his fluff, fluffy goodness for 3 years and hopefully for many more.


2, 3, 4.  The mice.  Mice make great pets, as we found out, when our little brother first got a pair from Petsmart.  Since then, we have gone through, and replaced, three mice because one of their not-so-great assets is that they don't live very long.  The ones we have currently are Amber, as the name states her fur is amber colored and has white speckles in it (see right photo).   Scarlet may look ugly on the outside with her non-appealing red eyes, and spunky hairdo, but she has a big heart. (see right photo left hand side)  Lastly, is Peter Parker, we keep him in a seprate cage because Petsmart accidentally gave us a boy mouse when they were supposed to have only females.  He is named Peter Parker because he can climb like nobody's business, just like Spider Man. (see left photo)


5.  Nibbles the bunny.  Nibbles is a mini-rex/lionhead mixed breed rabbit.  He has been in the Nelson Home for 5 years now and is the pet that has been here the longest.  He is not the most affectionate bunny out there, but he is nice every once and a while.  He likes to play outside, eat grass, pee on things, and groom himself.  All and all, he is a fun pet to have.




6, 7.  The finches.  Marco the zebra finch (shown top) , and Tinker the society finch (shown bottom).  They are like our personal alarm clocks, and make a huge racket early in the morning.  They aren't known for their pretty songs, Marco basically sounds like a demented squeaky toy, and Tinker sounds like music box that is stuck on repeat.  Even though they can be annoying at some times, (okay more than that) they're super cute, fun to watch, and make good pets (if you're okay with not being able to hold them).

We thank pets for the joy they bring to homes everywhere.  Scales, fins, fur, and feathers, they are all so different but so alike.
